Saturn by JonHrubesch Saturn by JonHrubesch
This is a commission done for miss-tada.deviantart.com for a project she is work on.

This is the Saturn concept. Floating land masses in the clouds with party cities built into them. I added massive directional fins of a sort to the sides of the floating mountains to give you a sense that they have a bit of control over where these behemoths travel. The floating mountain in the upper left would be the main castle.

These kind of settlements would be definitive cases of a 'hydraulic state'; societies completely depended on infrastructure to keep everyone alive.

Whether it be floating cities in gas giants, mining outposts on asteroids or void colonies at Lagrange points, these are particularly vulnerable to the development of centralized autocratic governments; like in Ancient China and Egypt, if a province rebels against their authority, all the autocrats have to do is shut off their supplies to crucial resources and life-support (Whether water, air, food, power etc.) and everyone in that provinces have to either surrender, or die.

To make matters worse, these kind of settlements are also vulnerable to societal collapses; large scale disintegration of societies and civilizations throughout history always involves the collapse of infrastructure that could only be maintained by resources and co-ordination ability capable only by centralized states, and the loss of knowledge, technical or otherwise, to maintain said infrastructure as experts, archives and education systems ceases to exist.

If you're a colony on a habitable planet, that's not much of a problem; at worst, the colonists descends into barbarism and doesn't come back out of the dark ages until generations later. But if you're living in a colony in deep space, or on a floating on a rock hovering in the atmosphere of a gas giant, requiring force-fields, anti-gravity generators and complex life-supports to prevent the colonists from suffocating, blown away, crushed by planetary gravity or falling to their deaths, this presents a much bigger problem. Unless the technology is designed to be completely idiot-proofed, extremely reliable, have high redundancy, and build to last a REALLY long time without supervision or maintenance, a societal collapse could end up killing everyone.

Nicely done, by the way.

This was a  commission.  miss-tada.deviantart.com didn't want me to add in spaceships to the images.  I guess even looking as low tech as the image of Earth is compared to Venus and Saturn, it is a single home like that of the Venus image, as I understand it, for one of her characters.

Earth may look low tech but I envisioned flying ships would land on the platforms above the lower house.  I would've like to have seen some people and ships depicted in the Earth image but she didn't want them shown.  I suppose it would be like the Wookie planet of Kashyyyk in Star Wars or something like that.

Careful when drawing ellipses, they're somewhat irregular.

Otherwise, I love this image. +1 for originality and audacity!

Thanks.  I had just said to another individual that I hadn't really spent the time on this that it deserves.  It would be super cool to see this built in a 3d program and painted over.  I could have just used the circle shape to clean up my ellipses too.  I would still like to see a cleaner version of this myself but that would definitely take a bit more time to do for sure.  I always say I learn a little something with each new painting and with this I think that is to respect the ellipse.  The eye gets annoyed when you don't clean that shit up!  Ha ha.

Also I feel that Dr. Seuss could sue me for stealing his architectural shapes... ;)

I would have likely done a more realistic coloring of Saturn that would have been a much less eye popping portrayal than this.  But the client gets what the client wants.  And I have to say it's kinda cooler and and more dramatic this way.  And yeah, the sun would not be this bright either.  The nice thing about art is you get to make those decisions and not let the laws of the universe get in the way.  ;)

Needless to say, I checked your image gallery. It was fair impressive. Each image embracing futuristic subjects, yet so refreshing one from another. Keep it up. ^^
