Moon Base by JonHrubesch Moon Base by JonHrubesch
Painted with a Wacom tablet on Photoshop CS3. Used Google Sketchup to built the 3D environment. My original sketch was much simpler. I guess I just got too involved in the 3D build and ended up creating a much larger painting. This was a lot of work and to be honest I feel like it ended up becoming a little too busy.

I will work on a simpler painting next time.

I used [link] for my reference for the anchor woman.

Thanks everyone! It was a nice surprise to find that Moon Base had been given a daily deviation.

Bloody hell, it's absolutely fantastic, would it have been too busy to put Earth in the background?

Thanks!

Ha ha.  I have to admit this was not as ambitious when I started the original sketch.  It was only going to be some military guys hanging in one of those circular seating areas with large windows over looking the moon's surface.  I feel like I should still do that original sketch the way I had intended.  Then I could add the Earth into it too.  This image has gotten a lot of attention so I'm happy for that but I still feel like I should do the painting as I had actually envisioned it.

The fact that this is Tranquility Base has absolutely nothing to do with Tranquility Lane in Fallout, right? o.O

Man, those people don't seem worried at all that they're about to get hit by a solar flare. I guess they got some powerful shielding protecting 'em, eh?

I figure they must store their water in tanks above the building. But I would hope they don't run low. Ha ha!

I've heard water can protect against a solar flare but I'm not sure how safe they would be.

Sounds fun. If this was a real place though, I would probably be too afraid to make the trip. I'm sure I wouldn't be able to afford it anyway. Ha ha!

Do you just use the linework from sketchup or are you having it do some of the lighting for you as well?

I don't know how to use the lighting in sketchup. I should learn more about it. I just use it to design the shape of an object or interior. I got lucky when I used it for my Moon Base painting. The shadows worked out for me so I kept them where they were.

Yeah, sketchup is a sweet tool. I've only used it for linework so far but maybe there is a mod to better control the light source(s).

Thanks. I do like to add detail to my work. Market Place is my attempt to be more painterly. This one took me about a month of weekends to finish and ended up much larger than my original idea.

Rather Monet-ish. Zoom in a lot, it's blurred, far away it has a lovely effect.

I thought about doing that but decided it might be too much of a cliche. Still it would have helped to explain that it is the Earth's moon. I guess I debated the idea as I got closer to finishing but I began to feel there was too much going on in the painting already. Still it might have helped it. Ha ha! You can see I'm still debating the idea.

Oh, wow... I read somebody else's comment about David Tennant/10th Doctor and I had to find him, just to make sure. This has made my day. :)

it also reminds me of the Phantasy Star series. Great job. :)

It was fun to add him in. I got the idea while I was randomly painting people in to fill the scene. He was the only other person I used reference for. I'm glad you like it.
